River Xu
Faculty: 4th year, Asper School of Business
Double Major: Accounting and Finance
Pursuing: Bachelor of Commerce (Hons)
In 2007, the Asper School of Business established the International Joint Program with the International College of Ningbo University in the People’s Republic of China and River Xu was one of the first Chinese students to apply.
“I have dreamed about going abroad since I was young, and my parents wanted me to get some international experience, so I was part of the initial program, which had six students.”
Through the program students of the International College of Ningbo University spend the first two years of their studies at Ningbo University and last two years at the Asper School of Business. The program is commonly known as the 2+2 program.
Now in his second year at the University of Manitoba and final year of his degree, River is proving that success comes to many students at the U of M, including those who have traveled half way around the world to receive their education.
He is not only on the verge of completing his studies at the University of Manitoba, which will result in a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from the International College of Ningbo University and a Bachelor of Commerce (Honours) degree from the Asper School of Business, but he is also well on his way to mastering some new languages, including French, German, and Japanese.
It is an ambitious goal to achieve so much so far from home, but River says the support he receives from the University of Manitoba is key to his success.
“Some of courses are really difficult and require a lot of devotion and time, but the teachers are very kind to me. As an international student, I really appreciate my professors’ enthusiasm, patience and desire to help me succeed.”
River says he hasn’t had any trouble making friends among students either.
“People at U of M are more outgoing than at Ningbo University, students show more interest in each other and get to know each other better.”
Within the faculty, River has been involved in the International Students Committee, and is a member of University of Manitoba Finance Organization (UMFO).
River wants to become a finance or accounting specialist and plans to start the Certified General Accountant program after graduating. Beyond that he would like to work in Canada for a few years before returning to China.
